While the effects of Emery-Dreifuss vary wildly between patients there are some patients that are able to perform low impact daily activities to help to slow the process of contractures or help the muscles to lengthen.
It is important to note that generally speaking the rule of muscle wasting diseases is that if you use it you lose it. Meaning that when the muscle fiber is damaged the body is incapable of repairing that muscle tissue resulting in the loss of that muscle tissue.
It has been found in EDMD patients that muscle wasting will speed up once the age of 50 is reached. While the medical community knows that this happens they are not entirely sure why that age triggers such a rapid loss of muscle tissue.
Due to this any physically demanding activity is usually not recommended for EDMD patients. However it is currently thought that some muscle stretching exercises can be beneficial to keep the muscles and tendons located at the usual contracture points flexible.
Swimming has been reccomended to EDMD Patients as way of keeping the muscles flexible and since it is low impact it is not considered to be degenerative to the patient.
Yoga can be form of vigorous exercise, however there are several low impact Yoga programs that can be beneficial in keeping the muscles and tendons flexible.
Pilates is another way that you can stretch the muscles in the areas where contractures usually take place.
Never start any exercise program without consulting your Neurologist and your Cardiologist.
